How do I know that my rehab aids and equipment are safe?

Regulating the import, supply, manufacture, export and advertising of therapeutic goods in Australia

Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA)

The TGA states on it’s website  that no medicine or medical device is completely safe and without risks and side effects, but that the TGA takes a number of steps to minimise the potential risks as much as possible. The Australian public should feel confident in the safety and quality of approved medical devices in Australia, with our regulatory requirements for medical devices amongst the most stringent in the world. Medical devices in Australia are not only subject to strict approval assessments, but are also monitored closely after they have been approved for supply, and are then included in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods.

Selecting safe, quality products

Gong Life Care Solutions is a family-owned mobility and rehab equipment supplier, located in beautiful  south coast  Wollongong, (just south of Sydney).  The business is proud to be Australian owned and operated.

The philosophy of the business is grounded in a commitment to improving quality of life in communities through excellent service - that is, through personalised service, assisting people to live independently, and by the provision of high quality, state-of-the-art, safe equipment for elderly people and people who have  disabilities.

All of the products we supply could be considered “niche” - being unique, or distinctive in some way -  in terms of quality, innovation, or design. The products were chosen because they meet very specific requirements of customers in the market. For example, the Strongback Mobility Wheelchair is the only one in Australia that provides lumbar support, incorporated into the primary/basic chair design. And the Aquabuddy-Home shower bathing trolley system is the only product in Australia that provides the opportunity for a person to be showered in bed (to avoid transferring someone who is frail, or in pain, to the bathroom).

We looked at evidence of quality, such as the European Commission report on the Aquabuddy shower-in-bed system, published in its research results magazine, in an article entitled ‘No More Bath-time Anxiety for At-home Bedridden Patients’.  The sub-heading stated:

“A new miniaturised, portable shower system for use in bed is a ground-breaking solution to the problems of maintaining hygiene for independent living for those with restricted mobility”

They called it  “a new generation of home shower “

Our Aquabuddy shower system is classified as a medical device. It is made in Italy, and is certified by the TGA  and European Conformity (CE).  Gong Life Care Solutions is the sole Australian supplier for this system.

Our portable Aquabuddy-Home shower system was designed for assistants/carers to use in place of traditional assisted bathing and showering aids and methods, either in aged care facilities or at home. In nursing homes, residents who are sick, frail, or not able to walk, are transferred to the bathroom using shower trolleys or commode chairs. But the use of  mobile shower trolleys in private homes is often not feasible due to their size and/or the size of rooms and hallways at home.

Bed-bath or shower in bed - now the choice is here!

Aquabuddy-Home is now available in Australia as a viable option to moving someone to the bathroom or awkward washing in the bed. Our system is adaptable to any bed – it literally turns hygiene care into an easy, quick and safe process. It is beneficial for people whose mobility is severely restricted, or for those whose pain levels preclude a lot of moving and transferring - people who are unable to wash or shower themselves independently. You can see a demonstration video of the Aquabuddy-Home system in use, on our webpage:

The Aquabuddy received a lot of attention at this year’s Independent Living Expo in Sydney , because it is such a practical solution for the problems of maintaining hygiene for people with restricted mobility, in a way that is safe for the receiver and also for the care-giver.  It is portable, lightweight, affordable and eco-friendly for long term care in the home.

We had great feedback at the Expo from people in care-giving roles, as well as professionals and students, about the need to prevent physical injuries to themselves and the person they’re caring for due to lifting and transferring during everyday activities, such as showering. We had the Aquabuddy set up with our  demonstration “mannequin man” in place, and most people thought that it was a type of bath, until they stopped to see it in action.

Some comments from visitors who watched our demonstrations include:

- “how much better it would be to use this (Aquabuddy) and not have to move

   someone to a bathroom”

-  “fabulous how it can be used with any type of bed”

-  “a person would feel so much cleaner and nicer with this shower instead of  just a bed-bath”

-  “wow, no mess! It’s so clever”

-  “very hygienic how it works with the two water tanks”

Full shower or quick clean-up

Attendees were surprised to learn that the Aquabuddy-Home is an electronic showering device that enables people to experience a full shower, or to be washed in a specific body area, such as the perineal area, or to have their hair shampooed, directly in the bed. Special equipment is included to suit these purposes and make it quick and easy to carry out the process and prevent any mishaps with bed linen and water!
